On-demand access to the Cambridge campus tour is available on YouTube. Watch the Cambridge Campus Tour today! Cambridge also has a 360 degree virtual tour at virtualtour.study.cam.ac.uk.

Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.

Cambridge Admission Requirements for CBSE and Cambridge A Level

Important note for CBSE students: Cambridge accepts CBSE Class 12 only for some courses, and only at some of its Colleges. Engineering, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics and Medicine are not on its CBSE list. For these courses, Class 12 results alone are not the route. Cambridge A Level students are on the route Cambridge knows best, but they still need the admissions tests.

Requirement CBSE Grade 12 Cambridge A Level
Boards Accepted CBSE Class 12 is accepted by 20 named Colleges, for a list of courses. The list is mostly arts, humanities, law, architecture, design and education, plus Veterinary Medicine. Not every College takes CBSE. Cambridge strongly suggests further study for other boards (such as State Boards), other Colleges and other courses. The India page does not name ISC or NIOS, so I will check with the College Cambridge accepts A Levels, including Cambridge International AS and A Levels. Cambridge students are already on a route Cambridge knows well
Minimum to Apply For the listed courses: grade A1 in five subjects that are relevant to the course. For any other course, Class 12 alone is not enough. Cambridge names A Levels and the IB. It also names five or more AP tests at score 5 plus A1 in five relevant Class 12 subjects, or the first year of a university degree outside the UK AAA is the usual minimum offer for Natural Sciences and Computer Science. Natural Sciences needs Maths plus two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Further Maths. Computer Science needs Maths, and Further Maths if your school offers it. Other courses differ, so check each course page
Extra Evidence for CBSE Students If your child wants to use AP tests, the Cambridge page asks for five or more at score 5. JEE Advanced is not named on Cambridge’s India page. If you want it to count, tell me and we will ask the shortlisted College before your child spends time and money on it Not needed. A Level results are enough for the exam side. The admissions tests still apply
Admissions Tests (2027 Entry) By course. ESAT for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine. TMUA for Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics. LNAT for Law. UCAT for Medicine. Computer Science at Peterhouse or Trinity also needs a CSAT. Many arts courses set a College test after an interview invitation. A few courses have no test, such as Archaeology, Education and History of Art. TARA is an Oxford test. Cambridge does not use it Same tests. A Level students get no exemption
Test Booking and Test Dates Booking for ESAT and TMUA closed on 28 September 2026 at 6 pm UK time. The tests are on 12 to 16 October 2026. UCAT booking closed on 16 September and LNAT booking on 15 September 2026. Each UAT-UK test costs GBP 133 (~INR 17,000) outside the UK and Ireland, and results come about four weeks after the test. A January sitting is only for mature Colleges Same
English Proficiency Cambridge usually asks for IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each part. TOEFL and Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency are also taken. Please read the exact scores on Cambridge’s English language page before you book, because they can change and some Colleges ask for more Some A Level students are also asked for an English test. I will ask your College whether English medium schooling counts
Application Portal and Code UCAS (ucas.com), Cambridge code C05. Deadline: 15 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time, which is 10:30 pm in India. Most international applicants pay a GBP 60 fee (~INR 7,600). Cambridge waives it for some countries, so please check the list Same. All applicants use UCAS
My Cambridge Application (MCA) A second online form that Cambridge asks everyone to complete. It is due by 22 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time, with the school transcript. Without it, the application cannot go ahead Same. Your school gives predicted A Level grades
Interview Shortlisted applicants are invited in November 2026. Most College interviews take place in the first three weeks of December. The interview is an academic talk. It checks how your child thinks about the subject. I will ask your College whether the interview will be online Same
Decision Timeline Interview results come on 27 January 2027. The offer is conditional. It is confirmed after your Class 12 results (about May 2027) and any extra evidence the College asks for, such as AP scores (about July). In January, strong applicants who did not get a place from their first College may be offered one by another College. This is called the Winter Pool Same dates. The offer depends on your A Level grades, and the final decision comes after the results in August 2027
Financial Aid and Scholarships Very little full funding exists for a first degree. Cambridge Trust awards are only for students who already hold a College offer, and all are means tested. Some Colleges give partial help. Gates Cambridge is for postgraduate study only. Please do not plan on a scholarship Same
Visa UK Student visa. A Cambridge College gives a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) after you accept the offer. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is GBP 776 a year (~INR 99,000), paid upfront. For a 3 year degree it is about GBP 2,716 (~INR 3.4 lakhs). Some courses need an ATAS certificate, a UK security check, before the visa Same process for all international students

Common to both pathways

All applications go through UCAS (ucas.com), Cambridge code C05. The deadline is 15 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time. The My Cambridge Application is due by 22 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time. CBSE and Cambridge A Level results both come in May. Cambridge gives offers that depend on final results. Cambridge reads the UCAS statement and the MCA together. It cares more about love for the subject and academic ability than about clubs and activities. Please also remember the UCAS rule that a student can usually apply to only one of Oxford and Cambridge in the same year.

Indian Alumni of Cambridge

Dr Manmohan Singh studied Economics at St John’s College, Cambridge, and finished with First Class Honours in 1957. He later served as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He also supported scholarships for Indian students at St John’s, which carry his name.

Why Should Your Child Consider the University of Cambridge?

#6 in QS, #5 in THE, and the Home of Cambridge A Levels

Cambridge is #6 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (June 2026). It is #5 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, published on 30 September 2026. In THE 2026 it was joint #3, so it moved down two places. The two lists use different methods, so please do not choose a course on a number alone. The University also has its own exam board, which sets the Cambridge AS and A Levels that students in India study. Many Nobel Prize winners are linked to Cambridge as students or staff.

The Supervision System

Cambridge is known for supervisions. These are weekly sessions with a specialist in the subject, usually with one to three students. Before each one, the student writes an essay or solves a problem set. The supervisor reads it closely and then talks it through with the student. It is not a lecture. It is a close academic conversation. Every Cambridge student has this, whichever College they join. It suits a student who loves the subject and wants to be challenged.

Natural Sciences, a Wide First Year

In Natural Sciences, students choose three science subjects plus a Maths based subject in the first year. They then narrow down later. A student who likes both Biology and Chemistry, or Physics and Chemistry, does not need to choose on day one. It is a popular course. In the 2025 cycle, Cambridge’s page says there were about 5 applications for each place. Every Natural Sciences applicant must take the ESAT. Please plan early for it.

Cambridge and India

Cambridge and India have a long shared history. India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru studied at Trinity College. The mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan from Tamil Nadu worked at Trinity with G.H. Hardy. Amartya Sen (Nobel Prize in Economics, 1998) and Dr Manmohan Singh both studied Economics at Cambridge in the 1950s. Vikram Sarabhai, who founded India’s space programme, studied Natural Sciences there.

What parents should know

  • CRITICAL, test booking: Cambridge needs a test for most courses. Booking for ESAT and TMUA closed on 28 September 2026 at 6 pm UK time, UCAT closed on 16 September and LNAT on 15 September. The January sitting is only for mature Colleges. A child who has not booked should not expect to apply to these courses in this round. Please write to us today so that we can talk about 2028 entry or other UK universities. Most of them have a later UCAS deadline, 13 January 2027 at 6 pm UK time.
  • CRITICAL, CBSE and the course list: Cambridge’s CBSE list does not include Engineering, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics or Medicine. A student on CBSE who wants one of these needs more than Class 12. Cambridge names A Levels and the IB. It also names five or more AP tests at score 5, with A1 in five relevant Class 12 subjects. Another route is a first year at a university outside the UK. JEE Advanced is not named on the India page, so I will ask the College first. Please plan this from Grade 10.
  • CRITICAL, dates: UCAS closes on 15 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time, which is 10:30 pm in India. The My Cambridge Application and transcript are due by 22 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time. Please ask your school for the transcript and predicted grades now. Missing either date ends the application.
  • How the timing works for CBSE: the January offer is a conditional offer, like the one an A Level student gets. Your place is confirmed later, after your Class 12 results (about May) and any extra evidence, such as AP scores (about July). This mirrors how an A Level offer is confirmed after the May results. You do not need AP results in hand when you apply in October. I will confirm with the College what it will ask for.
  • University tuition for 2027 entry is GBP 30,798 to 70,554 a year (~INR 39–90 lakhs at ~GBP 127/INR, October 2026). Humanities and social sciences are GBP 30,798, Mathematics GBP 34,356, and Engineering, Computer Science and Natural Sciences GBP 46,872. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are GBP 70,554. These figures are fixed for the whole course.
  • On top of tuition, overseas students pay a College fee. It was GBP 13,356 at King’s College for 2026 to 2027 (~INR 17 lakhs), and it differs by College. Cambridge estimates living costs for 2027 to 2028 at GBP 11,970 for 9 months and GBP 15,960 for 12 months (~INR 15–20 lakhs). So one year can cost about GBP 56,000 to 76,000 (~INR 71–97 lakhs) for most courses. For about Medicine and Veterinary Medicine it is about GBP 96,000 or more. Flights are extra. This is our own sum from the published figures.
  • UK visa costs: the IHS is GBP 776 a year, so about GBP 2,716 for a 3 year degree (~INR 3.4 lakhs). Many Cambridge courses run 4 years, and these cost more. Cambridge is outside London. From 30 November 2026, your child must show GBP 1,203 a month for up to 9 months, which is GBP 10,827 (~INR 14 lakhs). This must sit in the bank for 28 days in a row. The Graduate Route is the UK work visa after a degree. It is 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027. A student starting in 2027 will graduate after that date.
  • Scholarships: Cambridge says few full scholarships exist for a first degree, and most help is partial and means tested. The Cambridge Trust can only be applied for after you hold a College offer. Gates Cambridge is for Master’s and PhD study only. For 2027 entry, applications opened on 11 September 2026. The deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course. US citizens living in the USA apply by 14 October 2026. Results come on 8 March 2027. Please do not plan a first degree on a scholarship.
  • The interview matters. Most College interviews happen in the first three weeks of December. They test how your child thinks, not what they have memorised. Begin extra reading and subject talk from Grade 10 onwards.
