You can watch a UCL campus tour on YouTube. Watch the UCL Bloomsbury Campus Tour today! This video was made by an independent creator, not by the university. UCL also runs open events and tours. Please look on the UCL website, ucl.ac.uk, for current dates.

Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.

UCL Admission Requirements for CBSE, State Boards and Cambridge A Level

Please read the rows on Admissions Tests and Application Deadlines first. The old idea that UCL asks for no test is no longer true. Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Economics, Law, Medicine and some social science courses now need one. The January deadline is real, but the test dates come earlier.

Requirement CBSE / Indian State Boards Cambridge A Level
Boards Accepted CBSE and CISCE (ISC) are accepted. UCL also accepts four State Boards: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal. UCL says this has been so since 2025. Other State Boards are not on UCL’s list. Please read UCL’s India page for the subjects it counts for State Boards. UCL accepts A Levels and international A Levels. Its pages do not name Cambridge International by name, so please confirm for your child’s course.
Minimum Entry Requirements UCL’s rule for an A Level offer of ABB is five subjects at 90, 85, 85, 85 and 85. Where a course asks for A* at A Level, UCL expects 95. An A is 90 and a B is 85. Competitive courses ask for more, so read the course page. For 2027 entry, History BA is AAA, Psychology and Economics are AAA, and Computer Science and Mathematics MEng is AA*A. Offers for 2027 entry on the pages we read: History AAA (with History), Psychology AAA (with AA in two science or maths subjects), Economics AAA (A in Mathematics), Computer Science and Mathematics MEng AAA (A* in Mathematics). Medicine is A*AA with Biology and Chemistry.
Admissions Tests, CRITICAL These courses need a test. TARA: Computer Science (BSc and MEng), Computer Science and Mathematics MEng, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence MEng, and Mechanical Engineering (new for 2027). ESAT: Electronic and Electrical Engineering. TMUA: Economics. LNAT: Law, to be taken by 31 December 2026 as UCL states. UCAT: Medicine. UCL Thinking Skills Test: European Social and Political Studies and International Social and Political Studies. The October test booking closed on 28 September 2026. The January test days are 4 to 8 January 2027. Each of the first three tests costs about GBP 133 outside the UK (~INR 17,000 at ~GBP 127/INR, October 2026). The same tests apply. Being a Cambridge A Level student does not remove any test.
English Proficiency A score of 85 in CBSE English Core, or in ISC English (compulsory), meets UCL’s English rule for every level. Below 85, you need a test. For Level 1 courses such as Computer Science, IELTS Academic needs 6.5 overall with no part below 6.0. Higher levels need higher scores. History BA is Level 4 and Psychology is Level 3. UCL’s page lists some school English qualifications, but we did not see Cambridge A Level English named. Please ask us to check before you rely on a waiver. A test result is the safe route.
Interview Most courses do not list an interview. The exceptions are Medicine (online interviews for overseas applicants, December to March), Architecture (a portfolio first, then an online interview), Fine Art (online for students outside the UK), Pharmacy, and Law with a European legal system (a language interview). Same. No separate rule for Cambridge A Level students.
Personal Statement From 2026 entry, UCAS replaced the single essay with three guided questions. UCL looks at your academic potential and your reasons for choosing the course. Write about the subject, what you have read or tried, and why it interests you. Same for all applicants. Use your A Level subjects and reading in your answers.
Application Portal and UCAS Code UCAS (ucas.com). UCL’s code is U80. You can choose up to five courses in all. UCL says each UCL degree counts as one of the five. There is no separate UCL application form. A school reference and predicted grades are needed, and your school sends both. Same. All applicants use UCAS code U80.
Application Deadlines, CRITICAL Most courses: 13 January 2027 at 6 pm UK time. That is 11:30 pm in India. Medicine: 15 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time. That is 10:30 pm in India, because the UK is still on summer time. UCL gives equal consideration to applications that arrive by the January deadline. Apply well before the last hour. Same dates for all applicants.
Financial Aid and Scholarships The UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship is for students from outside the UK. For 2026/27 entry, UCL offered up to 33 awards. Ten covered full tuition plus living costs, twenty covered tuition, and three full tuition awards were for students from India. The deadline was 5 pm UK time on 27 April 2026. UCL has not posted 2027 entry dates yet, so please check in early 2027. UCL’s scholarships for Indian Master’s students do not help undergraduates. Same scholarships. Please read the criteria on UCL’s scholarship page.
Visa UK Student visa fee: GBP 558 (~INR 71,000). You can apply up to 6 months before the course starts. Health surcharge (IHS): GBP 776 a year (~INR 99,000), about GBP 2,716 (~INR 3.4 lakhs) for a 3 year degree, paid with the visa. Savings: from 30 November 2026, GBP 1,570 a month for London, up to 9 months. That is GBP 14,130 (~INR 18 lakhs), held for 28 days. Graduate Route: students who apply on or after 1 January 2027 get 18 months, not 2 years. Same process for all international students.

Common to both pathways

All applications go through UCAS (ucas.com), UCL code U80. Offers are usually conditional on your final results. CBSE and Cambridge A Level (March series) results both come in May. For 2026 entry, UCL asked students to meet their offer conditions by 5 pm UK time on 3 September 2026. Please check the date for 2027 entry. May results leave time for a query before that date.

UCL and Indian Students

UCL’s India page names Mahatma Gandhi, who registered for law at UCL in 1888 to 1889, and the poet Rabindranath Tagore among its Indian alumni. UCL says it has about 2,700 alumni in India. It also says more than 1,000 Indian students study there, and gave 1,016 for 2022 to 2023.

Why Should Your Child Consider UCL?

Joint 8th in QS 2027, in the Top 10 for 15 Years

UCL is joint 8th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, level with ETH Zurich. UCL says this is its 15th year in a row in the top 10. In QS subject rankings, as reported by UCL in June 2026, it is first in the world for Education and for Architecture and Built Environment. It is in the top 10 for Medicine, Psychology, Geography and Pharmacy and Pharmacology. These are strong signs, but a ranking is only one way to choose. The course and the city matter as much.

A January Deadline, but Check Your Course for Tests

Most UCL courses close on 13 January 2027, which is three months after Oxford and Cambridge. That gives CBSE and Cambridge A Level students more time to write a careful application. UCL also does not interview most applicants. There is one catch. Several courses need a test, and the test comes before the deadline. Mechanical Engineering joined the TARA list for 2027. Please check the course page every year, because the lists change.

A Very Wide Choice of Courses in One Place

UCL offers well over 100 undergraduate courses, from Engineering and Computer Science to Architecture, Law, History and Psychology. A student who is undecided between two related subjects can look at both at the same university. The Bartlett (Architecture and Built Environment) and the Institute of Education are the two areas that QS ranks first in the world, as UCL reports. Medicine is much harder to enter. UCL has just 24 places for overseas fee paying students.

UCL was founded in 1826 as London’s first university and opened its doors to students of any faith. Gandhi and Tagore are among the Indian names on UCL’s India page. Today UCL has more than 1,000 Indian students. For families in Tamil Nadu, the most useful fact is simple. UCL says it accepts the Tamil Nadu State Board directly, with the same marks it asks of CBSE. A student does not need to switch to CBSE to apply.

What parents should know

  • CRITICAL, tests: Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering need TARA. Electronic and Electrical Engineering needs ESAT. Economics needs TMUA. Law needs LNAT by 31 December 2026, as UCL states. Medicine needs UCAT. The October test booking closed on 28 September 2026. The January test days are 4 to 8 January 2027, and UCL’s page for its ESAT course gives 21 December 2026 as the booking date. Each of the first three tests costs about GBP 133 outside the UK (~INR 17,000). Please speak to me now if your child is applying to any of these courses.
  • CRITICAL, Medicine: the deadline is 15 October 2026 at 6 pm UK time, which is 10:30 pm in India. UCL has only 24 places for overseas fee paying students. The UCAT must be taken in the year of application, and interviews are online. UCL’s 2027 entry page for Medicine lists A Levels, IB and a few other qualifications. It does not list Indian boards. I will ask UCL whether CBSE is accepted before you apply.
  • CRITICAL, main deadline: 13 January 2027 at 6 pm UK time, which is 11:30 pm in India. Earlier UCL pages showed 14 January for the 2026 cycle, so please use the new date. Your school must send the reference and predicted grades before then, so ask your teachers early.
  • Marks for CBSE and ISC: for an ABB offer UCL asks for 90, 85, 85, 85 and 85 in five subjects. For A*, UCL expects 95. Courses such as Computer Science and Medicine ask for the top level in their key subjects. A score of 85 in CBSE English Core or ISC English also meets UCL’s English rule.
  • Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal State Boards are accepted. Other State Boards are not on UCL’s list. Please confirm your board with UCL before you apply.
  • Tuition for 2027 entry, per year: History BA is GBP 33,300 (~INR 42 lakhs at ~GBP 127/INR, October 2026). Computer Science and Mathematics MEng is GBP 48,600 (~INR 62 lakhs). Medicine is higher and its page showed no figure, so please ask. For most overseas students UCL promises that the fee will not rise during the course. Medicine is the exception, where it can rise each year within a limit.
  • Living costs in London are high. Our own planning estimate is GBP 15,000 to 20,000 a year (~INR 19–25 lakhs). This is not a UCL figure. With tuition, a year can cost about GBP 48,300 to 68,600 (~INR 61–87 lakhs). For the visa, you must show GBP 14,130 (~INR 18 lakhs) from 30 November 2026.
  • UK visa costs: the Student visa is GBP 558 (~INR 71,000). The health surcharge (IHS) is GBP 776 a year, about GBP 2,716 for 3 years (~INR 3.4 lakhs). The Graduate Route is the UK work visa after a degree. Students who apply on or after 1 January 2027 get only 18 months.
  • Some integrated Master’s courses in science and engineering may need an ATAS certificate, a UK security check. UCL says it can take a long time, so ask early. Students can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in holidays.
  • UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship: up to 33 awards for 2026/27 entry, with three full tuition awards for students from India. The last deadline was 27 April 2026. UCL has not posted 2027 entry dates, so check in early 2027. UCL generally treats a family income of GBP 42,875 or less (~INR 54 lakhs) as a guide to low income.
