Caltech has its own YouTube playlist, “Caltech Student Campus Tour”. Watch the Caltech Student Campus Tour today! The admissions website also has a visit page with online chats with current students: admissions.caltech.edu/visit.

Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.

Is Caltech Right for Your Child? Read This First

Caltech is a very small and very demanding place. Its core course asks every student to study basic sciences, humanities and social science, whatever the major. Caltech lists 33 undergraduate majors, mostly in science and engineering. This suits a child who enjoys long, hard problem sets and would rather go deep into one question than wide across many subjects. It may not suit a child who is good at many subjects but does not love maths and physics. It may also not suit a child who wants a large campus with a lot of variety. The numbers also say it is a long shot. For the class of 2029, Caltech had 11,285 applicants and a first-year class of 248. Fit matters more here than almost anywhere, so please read this edition with that in mind.

Caltech Admission Requirements, CBSE/State Boards and Cambridge A Level

Requirement CBSE / Indian State Boards Cambridge A Level
Boards Accepted CBSE, ICSE and State Board students apply in the same way as everyone else. We found no list of accepted boards and no fixed percentage on Caltech’s pages. A Level students apply in the same way. We found no list of accepted boards or fixed grades on Caltech’s pages. Ask your school counsellor to send a full set of results.
Academic Bar Caltech sets no official minimum. In practice, strong marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry matter most, because the course is built on them. Strong A Level Maths, Physics and Chemistry match what Caltech asks for. Caltech names no grade, so please do not rely on old advice about a fixed A Level grade.
Required Coursework The catalog lists four years of maths, including one year of calculus, plus one year of physics and one year of chemistry. If your school cannot offer a course, I will ask Caltech how to cover the gap. The catalog names a score of 5 on an AP exam as one way. The same list applies. A Level Maths, Physics and Chemistry usually cover it, but I will ask Caltech to confirm that your subject combination counts.
Standardised Tests SAT or ACT is required. Caltech says there is no preferred exam and no cut-off score. Even so, plan for a very strong score, especially in Maths. Caltech’s requirement pages do not list JEE or NEET, so do not count on them. The same rule applies. A Level results do not replace the SAT or ACT.
English Proficiency Required unless your first language is English, or English is the main language of teaching at your school. If you need a test, the minimum is IELTS 7 overall and 7 in each part, TOEFL (new format) 5 overall and 5 in each part, or Duolingo 130 overall and in each part. The same rule applies. A Level schools that teach in English usually qualify for the exemption, but please confirm with Caltech before you skip the test.
Essays The main Common App essay plus Caltech’s own short essays. Write about real curiosity in science, maths or engineering, in your child’s own voice. The same essays apply to every applicant.
Teacher Recommendations Two teacher letters are required. One must come from a STEM teacher (maths, chemistry, physics or biology). One must come from a humanities or social science teacher. The same requirement applies to every applicant.
Application Portal Common App or QuestBridge. Caltech has no preference between the two. QuestBridge has its own separate process, so ask us before choosing it. A fee applies and Caltech waives it if the cost is a hardship. The same. Caltech does not use UCAS.
Restrictive Early Action (REA) Due 1 November 2026. Other materials by 6 November and test scores by 30 November. Decision in mid December. You can wait until 1 May 2027 to reply. REA limits you from applying Early Action or Early Decision to most other colleges. The catalog lists exceptions, including colleges outside the US. The same dates and limits apply.
Regular Decision (RD) Due 4 January 2027. Other materials by 10 January and test scores by 31 December 2026. Decision in mid March. Reply by 1 May 2027. The same dates apply. November 2026 A Level results come on 7 January 2027, after this deadline.
Financial Aid for International Students (CRITICAL) Caltech is need aware for international applicants. This means that asking for aid can affect the admission decision, because the aid money for international students is limited. If your child is admitted, Caltech meets the full demonstrated need. REA and RD applicants can both ask for aid. You must ask for aid when you apply. If you do not apply for aid, or apply and do not get it in the first year, you cannot apply for aid in any later year. The same rules apply to every applicant, whatever the qualification.
If Admitted With Aid Caltech says its aid meets 100 percent of demonstrated need, through grants, work study and loans. For the class entering in fall 2026, the average grant was just under USD 69,000 (~INR 66 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). Caltech says families earning under USD 100,000 can expect aid for tuition, fees, housing and meals without loans. There are no merit scholarships. The same policy applies.
Visa F-1 student visa. Caltech gives you an I-20 form after you accept, and you need it for the interview. Applicants list their social media accounts from the past five years and set them to public before the interview. Since 15 September 2026, students are admitted for a fixed period of up to 4 years, not “until the course ends”, and must apply to extend. The interview wait changes by city and month, so check the State Department page. The same process applies.

Common to both pathways

Every applicant uses the Common App or QuestBridge, takes the SAT or ACT, and sends two teacher letters. Caltech reads each application in the context of the applicant’s own school and country. The strongest signal is depth in maths, with at least one year each of physics and chemistry behind it. Caltech’s pages do not list JEE or NEET rank as a requirement.

Voices from Caltech, Alumni Who Shaped Science

Caltech’s own list of Nobel laureates includes Kip Thorne (BS 1962), who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017. It also includes Andrea Ghez (MS 1989, PhD 1993), who won the Physics prize in 2020. Ardem Patapoutian (PhD 1996) won the Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2021. Caltech’s list covers faculty, alumni, trustees and current and former postdocs.

Why Should Your Child Consider Caltech?

QS #7 and THE #7, With a Nobel Record Few Can Match

Caltech is #7 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and #7 in the THE World University Rankings 2027. Rankings move from year to year, so treat them as a rough guide. Caltech says its faculty and alumni include 48 Nobel laureates, who share 49 prizes. It has only 971 undergraduates, and the student-faculty ratio is 3:1. That means undergraduates can work close to the researchers who do this work. Caltech also manages NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which sends probes to explore the planets of our solar system.

A Common Core and Early Research

Every Caltech undergraduate takes the same core, which covers basic sciences, humanities and social science, whatever the major. Caltech has six academic divisions and 33 undergraduate majors. Students find research early. Most undergraduates join the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), a 10 week paid programme where students work with faculty on a research proposal. Student life is organised around nine residential communities. An honor system shapes how students behave and work. Caltech says its campus has about one PhD researcher for every student.

Financial Aid, Generous But With One Strict Rule

Caltech is need aware for international students. This means the amount a family can pay may count in the admission decision. For US citizens it is need blind. If your child is admitted, Caltech meets 100 percent of the demonstrated need. The average grant for the class entering in fall 2026 was just under USD 69,000 (~INR 66 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026).

Please plan around one strict rule. An international student must ask for aid when they apply. A student who does not apply for aid, or applies but does not qualify in the first year, cannot apply again in any later year. Caltech gives no merit scholarships. All aid is based on need. The total cost for 2026-27 on campus is USD 98,622 a year (~INR 95 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). Of this, USD 93,225 is billed by Caltech for tuition, fees, housing and meals. The rest is an estimate for books and personal costs.

Caltech and India

Caltech does not publish a list of accepted Indian boards that we could find. CBSE, State Board and Cambridge A Level students all apply through the same Common App or QuestBridge route. Caltech’s requirement pages ask for the SAT or ACT, two teacher letters, essays and English proof if your school does not teach in English. They do not list JEE or NEET.

What parents should know

  • CRITICAL. Caltech is need aware for international students, and you must ask for aid when you first apply. If you skip aid, or apply and do not get it in year one, you cannot ask for aid at Caltech in any later year. Decide the family budget before you apply, not after
  • Older guides say that applying Restrictive Early Action (1 November) cancels aid for international students. Caltech’s current pages say REA and RD applicants can both ask for aid. Please check the rule again on Caltech’s international page before you choose your round
  • Total cost for 2026-27 on campus is USD 98,622 a year (~INR 95 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). The average grant for the fall 2026 class was just under USD 69,000. No merit scholarships exist. Aid is need based only
  • Dates for 2027 entry: REA is due 1 November 2026 and RD is due 4 January 2027. Test scores are due 30 November (REA) and 31 December 2026 (RD). Book the SAT or ACT early
  • Calendar: CBSE and Cambridge A Level (March series) results both come in May, after the March decision. November 2026 A Level results come on 7 January 2027, after the RD deadline. I will ask Caltech how it wants final results sent
  • Caltech asks for the SAT or ACT and sets no cut-off score. Your child still needs a very strong score, mainly in Maths. Caltech’s requirement pages do not list JEE or NEET
  • It is a long shot. For the class of 2029, Caltech had 11,285 applicants and a first-year class of 248. Apply to other universities as well
  • Fit matters. The core is heavy in maths, physics and chemistry, and the campus is small. This is right for a child who loves those subjects, not for a broad all rounder
  • US visa rules are changing. Social media accounts of the past five years must be listed and set to public. Since 15 September 2026, students are admitted for a fixed period of up to 4 years and must apply to extend. India is not on the US travel ban list, as far as we could find
  • After the degree, OPT lets a student work in the US for 12 months, and STEM OPT adds 24 months. The US government says it is reviewing OPT, but we found no published rule to end it. The USD 100,000 fee on new H-1B work visas is in court and currently blocked. Check before you rely on either
