A campus tour video made by the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, is on YouTube. Watch the Princeton Campus Tour today! It is not made by the university. Princeton’s admission office also has a page for international students at admission.princeton.edu/apply/international-students. For visits or live online sessions, please check the admission site for current options.

Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.

Princeton Admission Requirements — CBSE/State Boards and Cambridge A Level

Requirement CBSE / Indian State Boards Cambridge A Level
Boards Accepted Princeton reads your transcript in the context of your own school and curriculum. It names IGCSE, A Level, IB and national exams. It says no system or country has an advantage. There is no fixed percentage cut-off. Cambridge AS and A Level results are accepted and understood.
Standardised Testing — TEST-OPTIONAL for 2027 entry only For fall 2027 entry, SAT or ACT scores are optional. Princeton says that a student who applies without a score will not be at a disadvantage. From fall 2028 entry, Princeton will require the SAT or ACT. Plan your child’s test dates by the entry year, not by this year’s rule. The same rule applies. For fall 2027, no score is needed. For fall 2028 entry, an SAT or ACT score will be needed.
English Proficiency Needed only if English is not your first language. Students are exempt if they have spent three years in a secondary school where English was the main language of teaching. Otherwise, send TOEFL, IELTS Academic, Duolingo English Test or PTE Academic. Many Cambridge schools teach in English, so the three year school rule often applies. Check it against your child’s own school years.
The Graded Written Paper A paper your child wrote and a teacher graded, preferably in English or history. It is sent along with the application. For international students, it must be in English. An essay from AS or A Level coursework can work. Ask the school to keep a graded copy ready.
Essays The Common Application essay and the Princeton questions that come with it. The same for every applicant.
Teacher Recommendations Two teacher recommendations, each from a different academic area. A school report and a counsellor recommendation are also needed. The school sends a midyear report as well. The same for every applicant. Ask the school early, because the school sends these papers, not the family.
Interview An alumni interview is optional. Princeton says that a student who does not have one is not at a disadvantage. The same.
Application Portal The Common Application. Princeton does not use UCAS. A fee applies, and fee waivers are available for families who need them. Check the amount on Princeton’s checklist page. The same.
Single-Choice Early Action (SCEA) Deadline: 1 November 2026. Decision: mid December. Reply by 1 May. It does not bind you to attend. But your child cannot apply early to any other private college or university in the USA. Public universities, service academies and international schools stay open. The same rule applies. Early applicants will send school marks and predicted grades, because A Level results come later.
Regular Decision (RD) Deadline: 1 January 2027. Decision: late March. Reply by 1 May. CBSE Class 12 results come in about May, so the offer is based on the school record up to the midyear report. The same dates. The November 2026 series AS and A Level results are due on 7 January 2027, after the deadline.
Financial Aid for International Students — CRITICAL Princeton says its admission is need-blind, and that the full need of admitted international students is met the same way as for US students. Aid forms are due on 9 November 2026 for SCEA, and 1 February 2027 for RD. You cannot apply for aid before you apply for admission. The same policy for all international applicants.
If Admitted With Need Princeton meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants, not loans. Since 2001, grants have replaced loans for all aid recipients. Families who earn under USD 100,000 a year have full tuition, room and board covered. Most families earning up to USD 150,000 pay nothing for tuition, room and board. These figures were published for US families. I will ask Princeton how it will assess a family in India. The same for all admitted international students.
Visa F-1 student visa. After admission, the university issues the I-20 form. Since June 2025, F-1 applicants must list their social media accounts and make them public. India is not on the current US travel ban list. The same process.

Common to both pathways

All applications go through the Common Application. Princeton does not use UCAS. For fall 2027 entry the test is optional, but for fall 2028 entry it is required, so the year of entry decides the plan. Princeton also asks for a graded written paper, a real piece of classroom writing. Cambridge families should ask the school to keep a graded essay ready.

Voices from Princeton — Indian Alumni

Dr. Gita Gopinath earned her PhD in Economics at Princeton in 2001. She was Chief Economist of the IMF from January 2019 to January 2022, the first woman to hold that post. She then served as its First Deputy Managing Director until August 2025. Here is her advice to Princeton students, from an interview on the Princeton Department of Economics website:

“Take every opportunity to learn from the fantastic professors at Princeton, including reaching out to them outside of class. Challenge yourself by taking a rigorous set of classes.”

— Dr. Gita Gopinath, PhD in Economics, Princeton University (2001) | Former Chief Economist and First Deputy Managing Director, IMF | Princeton Department of Economics Q&A

Another Indian name linked to Princeton is Nambi Narayanan, an ISRO scientist. The Government of India sent him to Princeton in 1969, where he studied rocket propulsion for a Master of Science in Engineering. He later received the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in March 2019.

Why Should Your Child Consider Princeton?

Reading Beyond QS — An Honest Ranking Picture

Princeton is #27 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. A year earlier, in QS 2026, it was #25, so it has gone down by two places. That is below MIT (1), Stanford (joint 2), Harvard (5), Caltech (7) and Yale (16) in the same list. In the THE World University Rankings 2027, published on 30 September 2026, Princeton is joint 3. Two rankings that disagree this much tell you that the lists measure different things. Do not choose or drop a university on one number. Look at the course, the aid and the fit.

Aid in Grants, Not Loans

Princeton says its admission is need-blind, including for international students. Your family’s ability to pay is not meant to affect the admission decision. It also says it meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants, and that grants have replaced loans for all aid recipients since 2001. Only a handful of US universities say the same for international students. Amherst, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT and Yale are the other five. Need-blind does not mean free. Your family still pays what Princeton calculates it can afford. Families who earn under USD 100,000 a year have tuition, room and board covered. Most families who earn up to USD 150,000 pay nothing for those costs. Princeton says 89% of recent seniors finished with no debt.

A Small, Teaching Focused University

Princeton has no business school, no law school and no medical school. This keeps the focus on undergraduate study and on research. It suits a child who wants arts, sciences, engineering or public policy. A child who wants business or medicine as a first degree should look elsewhere. About 98% of undergraduates live on campus. The first year class is about 1,400 students, and 12.9% of the Class of 2030 are international citizens. Seats for international students are limited, so a strong application matters even with aid in place.

Princeton and India

Princeton’s Indian connections reach from economic policy to space science. Dr. Gita Gopinath completed her PhD in Economics at Princeton in 2001 and went on to become Chief Economist of the IMF. Nambi Narayanan studied rocket propulsion at Princeton and later received the Padma Bhushan. Princeton’s Davis International Center supports international students once they arrive. The university’s aid policy applies in the same way to Indian families as to American ones. For a family weighing the true cost of an American degree, that is the main reason to take Princeton seriously.

What parents should know

  • CRITICAL — Princeton is test optional for fall 2027 entry only. From fall 2028 entry, it will require the SAT or ACT. If your child is in Class 11 now, plan SAT or ACT dates this academic year.
  • Aid forms have their own dates. For SCEA, the aid application is due on 9 November 2026, not 1 November. For RD, it is due on 1 February 2027. You cannot apply for aid before you apply for admission.
  • Total cost for 2026-27: USD 90,574 a year (~INR 87 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026) for tuition, fees, housing and food. Tuition alone is USD 68,140. Books, personal costs and travel are extra. Princeton lists an average grant of about USD 83,000 for aid recipients, but these averages are mostly for US families.
  • The income figures (full cover under USD 100,000, most costs covered up to USD 150,000) were published for US families. Need-blind does not mean free, and only about 12.9% of the Class of 2030 are international citizens. I will ask the Princeton aid office how it assesses an Indian family.
  • SCEA (1 November 2026) does not bind you, but it stops your child from applying early to any other private US university. RD (1 January 2027) has no such limit.
  • CBSE and Cambridge A Level (March series) results both come in May. November 2026 series results come on 7 January 2027. Princeton decides before either. It reads the school record, midyear report and predicted marks. Your child also needs two teacher recommendations from different subjects. The school sends these, so ask your school now.
  • Visa rules are moving fast. From 15 September 2026, F-1 students get a fixed stay of up to 4 years, tied to the programme, and must apply to extend it. A four year degree fits, but a delay means an extension request. Social media accounts must be public for the visa interview and a new visa fee may apply. India is not on the US travel ban list.
  • After the degree, OPT (12 months, and 24 more for STEM subjects) still exists. The US government says it is reviewing it, and we found no published rule to end it. Rules on work visas change often, so check again before you rely on them.
