- QS 2027: #597 Globally · #119 in QS Engineering and Technology 2026 *QS World University Rankings 2027 place VIT at 597, up 94 places from 691, the biggest rise by any Indian institution. In India’s NIRF 2025 it is 16th for Engineering, down from 11th in 2024. NIRF 2026 was not published when this edition went out.
- University: Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) · Deemed university since 2001 · NAAC A++ (2021) · Vellore and Chennai are one university; VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal are separate state private universities
- Location: Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The campus is 3 km from Katpadi Junction. Trains from most Tamil Nadu towns take about 3 to 5 hours.
- Founded: 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by G. Viswanathan, still its Chancellor · Over 58,000 students from 60 countries (VIT’s own 2024-25 figure)
- Legacy: The Fully Flexible Credit System, where students build their own timetable · A Semester Abroad Programme with over 500 partner universities
- Popular Subjects: Computer Science and its specialisations, Electronics and Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical, Electrical, Biotechnology
- Curriculum Accepted: CBSE, ISC, Tamil Nadu State Board and every recognised board, all through VITEEE. Cambridge A Level is accepted with English at AS or A Level.
VIT has its own campus video. Watch Campus Life by Vellore Institute of Technology on YouTube. This is the university’s own channel, so expect the best view of the campus. Student walkthrough videos also exist, and we can share them on request.
Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.
VIT Admission Requirements for CBSE/State Boards and Cambridge A Level
Please read the Minimum to Apply row and the Deadlines row first. VIT checks the board marks after the fee is paid, and that order catches families out. Every date below is from the 2026 cycle. VITEEE 2027 had not been announced when this edition went out, and VIT usually opens applications in late October or November.
| Requirement | CBSE / Indian State Boards | Cambridge A Level |
|---|---|---|
| Boards Accepted | CBSE, ISC, the Tamil Nadu State Board and every other recognised Central or State Board are treated the same. NIOS is accepted with at least five subjects. A student who sat two board exams in the same year is not eligible. English must have been a subject in regular, full time schooling. | Cambridge A Level is accepted. VIT asks for Physics and Mathematics at A Level, Chemistry at A or AS Level, and English at AS or A Level. So a Cambridge student who wants VIT takes AS Level English alongside the science A Levels. Please plan this in Class 11, and I will help with the subject list. IB is accepted with Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level. |
| Minimum to Apply | 60 percent aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with at least 50 percent in Mathematics. SC, ST and students from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and the North East need 50 percent. The rule is on board marks, not on the VITEEE rank. VIT’s own example: 62 percent overall but 53 percent in PCM is a fail. Biology in place of Mathematics opens only six programmes, such as Biotechnology, with a Mathematics bridge course. Date of birth on or after 1 July 2004 for 2026 entry. | Same rule. VIT asks for grades converted to percentages, with an equivalence certificate for exams taken outside India. Since 2025 the University Grants Commission (UGC) issues these certificates, so if an official page still says AIU, read it as UGC. I arrange the certificate and the grade conversion with VIT before counselling. |
| Entrance Exams | VITEEE only. It is compulsory for every Indian national, and VIT does not use JEE Main, SAT or board marks for B.Tech. Computer based, 2 hours 30 minutes, 125 questions: Mathematics or Biology 40, Physics 35, Chemistry 35, Aptitude 10, English 5. Plus 4 for a right answer, minus 1 for a wrong one. One attempt a year. Test cities include Erode, Salem, Coimbatore and Namakkal. VIT publishes its own syllabus, which names no board. | Same exam. There is no SAT door for a Cambridge student living in India. The NRI route needs a parent living abroad as sponsor, and the foreign route needs a foreign passport and schooling abroad. I will help an A Level student compare VIT’s syllabus with the Cambridge syllabus early. |
| English and Other Tests | No separate English test. VITEEE has five English questions. No interview. Teaching is in English. | Same. The English rule above is about Class 12 subjects, not a test. |
| Application Portal | viteee.vit.ac.in only. Fee INR 1,350, not refunded. One application covers all four VIT campuses. Slot booking opens in April, first come first served, and a slot once booked cannot be changed. VIT warns of fake websites, agents and direct admission calls. There is no management quota. | Same portal. Keep the Cambridge statement of results, the IGCSE certificate and the transfer certificate ready. The hall ticket of the qualifying exam is needed at counselling. |
| Deadlines | These are the 2026 dates. Applications opened in late October 2025 and closed on 12 April 2026. Exam 28 April to 3 May. Result in the second week of May. Counselling online from the second week of May, in five phases by rank, to 20 June. Counselling fee INR 5,900. Final tuition by 27 May for the first phase and by 4 July for the last. Once a campus, branch and fee category are allotted, nothing can be changed. CBSE and State Board results in May fit this. | Same dates, and they fit. Cambridge students in India usually sit the March series, so results come in mid May (19 May in 2026), before counselling. A subject sat in the June series gets results in August, after the fee is paid, and VIT voids an admission that fails the 60 and 50 percent rule, so keep every subject in March. I will track each date with you. |
| Fees and Hostel | Tuition depends on a fee category set by VITEEE rank at counselling. For 2026-27, CSE, ECE, IT, Mechanical and most branches cost INR 1,95,000 (Category 1), 3,04,000, 4,02,000, 4,45,000 or 4,90,000 (Category 5) a year. Biotechnology, Chemical and Civil cost INR 1,73,000 to 3,95,000. VIT does not publish the rank bands for each category. Hostel is compulsory unless home is within 65 km. A Vellore four bed non AC room with veg mess is INR 1,26,200 a year, plus INR 15,000 admission fee and INR 15,000 refundable deposit. A two bed AC room is INR 2,07,500. Hostel fees rise every year. | Same fees. Our own planning estimate for the first year in a CSE type branch with a basic room is about INR 3.6 lakhs at Category 1 and INR 6.6 lakhs at Category 5. Four years of Category 5 tuition alone is about INR 19.6 lakhs at today’s rates. Decide the family budget before counselling, because the category cannot be changed after allotment. |
| Scholarships and Loans | The GV School Development Programme waives tuition by VITEEE rank: 100 percent for ranks 1 to 10, 75 percent for 11 to 50, 50 percent for 51 to 100 and 25 percent for 101 to 500, for four years if VIT’s conditions are met. It covers tuition, not hostel. The 2026 documents show no waiver for board toppers, whatever older pages say. STARS gives full support to district toppers from rural government schools, by VIT’s own shortlist. Bank education loans work as for any Indian degree. | Same. The rank waiver is the only one that applies, and a Cambridge student has no board topper route in any case. |
Common to both pathways
VIT has no board quota, no management quota, no NRI door for a family living in India, and no use for JEE or SAT. The only way in for a student in India is a VITEEE rank, and the rank decides the branch, the campus and the fee. Vellore and Chennai are one deemed university. VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal are separate state private universities, and ranks above 1,00,000 were offered those two only in 2026. A degree from those campuses is from a different university, so check the campus name on the allotment before paying.
Voices from VIT
VIT’s Semester Abroad Programme page carries this line from Nabhas Revi Kumar, a Mechanical Engineering student. He spent a semester at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan. The line is from VIT’s own website, and we have not added to it. He wrote: “The Semester Abroad Program enabled me to deepen my understanding of material sciences and provided hands-on experience in mechanical experimentation and simulations.”
Why Should Your Child Consider VIT?
The Highest Placed Non-IIT in QS Engineering and Technology 2026
QS placed VIT at 119 in the world for Engineering and Technology in 2026, above IISc at 129 and above every Indian institution outside the IITs. In the same QS subject tables, Computer Science is 86 and Electrical and Electronic Engineering is 87. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 VIT rose 94 places to 597, the biggest rise by any Indian institution, though three private universities still sit above it. In India’s NIRF 2025 it is 16th for Engineering, 14th among universities and 21st overall. The Engineering rank fell from 11th in 2024, so watch NIRF 2026 when it appears. NAAC gave it A++ in 2021.
A Timetable the Student Builds
VIT’s Fully Flexible Credit System lets a student choose the order of courses, the time slots and the teachers, and how many courses to take in a semester. A strong student can finish early or add a minor, honours or a double major. Summer and intersession courses are available, and undergraduate research is built in. VIT also says a student may switch B.Tech branch after the first year, subject to its rules. This freedom suits a self driven child. A child who needs a fixed routine may find the first semester hard, so talk about it at home.
A Semester Abroad Without Leaving the Degree
Pre final and final year students can spend a semester at a partner university, or at any university in the QS top 500. They do a project or approved electives there, and the credits count at VIT. VIT gives travel help as a scholarship to students who meet its criteria, once. VIT lists over 500 partners, including Johns Hopkins, Northeastern, KTH in Sweden and the Australian National University. An International Transfer Programme lets an engineering student finish the degree abroad in the USA, UK, Belgium, Sweden, New Zealand or Australia. VIT does not publish the costs of either route, so ask before you count on them.
Placements, Told Straight
VIT’s own data to NIRF 2026 covers 11,913 four year undergraduates who finished in 2024-25. Of these, 7,023 were placed, which is 59 percent. The median salary was INR 6 lakhs, down from INR 8.99 lakhs the year before. Another 1,660 went on to higher studies. VIT’s placement tracker shows 11,352 students placed in 2025 and 1,079 companies, across all four campuses together. VIT quotes a highest offer of INR 1 crore. That is one offer. The median and the share placed are the numbers a family should plan on.
What parents should know
- CRITICAL, AS Level English for Cambridge students. VIT asks Cambridge students for English at AS or A Level, alongside Physics and Mathematics at A Level and Chemistry at A or AS Level. A child in Class 11 who wants VIT should add AS English now. VIT also checks the board marks after the fee is paid, so the 60 percent in PCM and 50 percent in Mathematics must be real, not hoped for. I am here to help with the subject plan and the grade conversion.
- Results timing fits. Cambridge students in India usually sit the March series and get results in mid May, like CBSE, before VITEEE counselling. A subject sat in the June series would get results in August, after the fee is paid. The tuition refund would then follow AICTE and UGC norms, so keep every subject in March.
- CRITICAL, the fee is set by rank and cannot be changed. VIT does not publish which ranks get Category 1 to 5. A middling rank pays INR 4.45 to 4.9 lakhs a year for CSE and most branches. Decide the family’s upper limit before counselling. Once the campus, branch and category are allotted there is no sliding, no upgrade and no change.
- Hostel is compulsory and strict. The main gate closes at 7 pm and the hostel gate at 8:30 pm. First year students may not leave the campus for three months. Home visits are twice a month with parent approval. Attendance is biometric every night between 9 and 10:15 pm, and a miss sends a message to the parent. No visitors, including parents, may enter the hostel blocks. No electrical gadgets or cooking. Laptops and phones are allowed. Parents and students sign these rules on stamp paper.
- Four campuses, two universities. One VITEEE counselling covers Vellore, Chennai, AP and Bhopal, but only Vellore and Chennai are the deemed university that carries the rankings above. In 2026, ranks above 1,00,000 were offered AP and Bhopal only. Check the campus on the allotment.
- Read placement numbers with care. VIT’s own figures show a median of INR 6 lakhs and 59 percent of four year graduates placed in 2024-25. Offer counts cover all four campuses and count more than one offer per student.
- VITEEE 2027 was not announced when this edition went out. Coaching sites expect applications to open in late October or November 2026 and the exam in April 2027, but that is a guess. Use only vit.ac.in and viteee.vit.ac.in. VIT itself warns of fake sites and agents, and it has no management quota.
- VIT’s own blog says it leads private universities in QS 2027. It does not. Shoolini, Chandigarh University and BITS Pilani sit above it in that list. It is the fastest climber, which is a fair claim. NIRF 2026 was not out when this edition went out, so we use NIRF 2025.
- Close to home, with care on site. Trains from most Tamil Nadu towns reach Katpadi in about 3 to 5 hours, and the campus is 3 km from the station. The health centre runs 24 hours with doctors, nurses, about 20 beds and three ambulances. Hostel security escorts students to the station for late night or early morning trains.
- Money that does not come back: the application fee of INR 1,350, the counselling fee of INR 5,900 and the hostel admission fee of INR 15,000. Hostel fees rise every year, and there is no refund for moving to a cheaper room or mess.
