On-demand access to the Imperial College London virtual campus tour is available on YouTube. Watch the ICL Campus Tour today! This video was made by an independent creator, not by the university.
Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.
ICL Admission Requirements — CBSE and Cambridge A Level
The table below sets out what Imperial College London asks for from students in each pathway. Rules differ by course, so please read the course page as well. For subject advice and help with admissions tests, write to me for a one to one session.
| Requirement | CBSE Grade 12 | Cambridge A Level |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Indian Class 12 (CBSE or CISCE) is on Imperial’s accepted list | Imperial accepts A level grades and equivalents. Its page does not name Cambridge International A Level, so I will confirm this with Imperial |
| Minimum to Apply | 90% overall across five subjects and 90% in the relevant subjects. Some departments ask for more | Standard offers run from AAA to AAA, depending on the course |
| Competitive Benchmark | Many courses need marks well above 90% in Maths, Physics or Chemistry | AAA is the offer for Computing, Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering. Check each course page |
| Predicted or Class 11 marks | Imperial’s table lists Class 12 only. It does not say how predicted marks or Class 11 results are used, so I will confirm this with Imperial | Most applicants apply on predicted grades. Final grades are needed only if you hold an offer |
| English Proficiency | Class 12 English at 70% meets both levels. Or IELTS 6.5 (6.0 in each part) for the standard level, 7.0 (6.5 in each part) for the higher level | Same tests. TOEFL iBT 92 or 100, Duolingo 115 or 125. Check which level your course needs |
| Admissions Tests | ESAT for Aeronautics, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Life Sciences and Physics. TMUA for Computing, Mathematics and Economics, Finance and Data Science. UCAT for Medicine | Same for all applicants |
| Personal Statement | Written in UCAS as answers to guided questions. One statement is used for all your choices | Same |
| Teacher References | One academic reference through UCAS | Same |
| JEE / Olympiads | Not part of Imperial’s general table. Some department pages mention JEE, so check your course page | Not applicable |
| ATAS Certificate | Needed for some courses only, for example Physics. Imperial says it is not needed for Computing or Mathematics. Check your course page | Same. It depends on the course |
| Application Portal | UCAS (ucas.com). Imperial’s UCAS code is I50. You can make up to 5 choices in total | Same |
| Medicine Deadline | 15 October 2026, 6 pm UK time (10:30 pm IST) | Same |
| All Other UG Courses | 13 January 2027, 6 pm UK time (11:30 pm IST) | Same |
| Visa Requirement | UK Student visa. Imperial gives you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) after you accept an offer | Same |
Common to both pathways
All applications go through UCAS (ucas.com), and you can make up to 5 choices in total. If a test is required for your course, Imperial cannot consider your application without it. The ATAS Certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) is a free UK government clearance that some courses need before the visa application. The Graduate Route visa lets graduates stay and work in the UK after study without an employer sponsor. For a bachelor’s degree it is 2 years if the graduate applies on or before 31 December 2026. It is 18 months if they apply on or after 1 January 2027. PhD graduates get 3 years.
Voices from ICL — Indian Students
Imperial’s own department blogs carry first hand stories from Indian students. Two earlier examples are Dhruv Jimulia, a first year Computing undergraduate (2022), and Abhiram Chakka, a postgraduate researcher at the National Heart and Lung Institute (2025).
Why Should Your Child Consider Imperial College London?
Joint #2 in the World, and #1 in the UK, on QS 2027
Imperial College London is joint second in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026, and first in the UK. Imperial describes itself as a world leading university for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business. Its page lists 14 Nobel Prize winners linked to the university. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide named it University of the Year for 2027. Rankings differ by method, so use them as one guide only.
Location: South Kensington, London
Imperial’s main campus is in South Kensington, close to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. London is a large hub for finance, technology and research. London has a large Indian community, so food and shops from home are easy to find. After study, the Graduate Route visa allows graduates to stay and work without an employer sponsor. For students who apply from 1 January 2027, it will be 18 months for a bachelor’s degree.
A Focused STEM Education
Imperial teaches science, engineering, medicine and business. Its four faculties are Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine and the Imperial Business School. Many engineering and science courses are four year integrated Master’s degrees, so plan for four years of fees and living costs, not three. Check the course page for the exact length.
Scholarships, and What Is Not Open to Undergraduates
The main award for 2027 entry is the Imperial Inspires Scholarship. It gives at least GBP 15,000 a year (~INR 19 lakhs at ~GBP 127/INR, October 2026) for every year of the course. Imperial plans at least 300 awards for overseas fee paying students, including undergraduates. It is a partial award, so the family still pays the rest. After you apply through UCAS, Imperial invites eligible applicants to a separate scholarship application from October 2026. Undergraduates are asked for an optional essay. The India Future Leaders Scholarship is for Master’s students only, so it does not help a Class 12 student.
What parents should know
- CRITICAL: Imperial’s Class 12 bar for CBSE is now 90% overall across five subjects and 90% in the relevant subjects. Older guides say 85%. Some departments ask for more, so read the course page before you plan.
- CRITICAL: Tests come first. Booking for the October ESAT and TMUA closed on 28 September 2026. Imperial lists a January sitting from 4 to 8 January 2027, with booking from 26 October to 21 December 2026 (6 pm UK time). If your course needs a test and you skip it, Imperial cannot consider your application. Each test costs about GBP 133 (~INR 17,000) outside the UK and Ireland.
- Medicine: the deadline is 15 October 2026, 6 pm UK time. The UCAT testing period on Imperial’s page ended on 24 September 2026. If your child has not sat it, tell me at once and we will ask Imperial. Medicine is the most expensive course. I will ask Imperial whether CBSE applicants face any extra Medicine rule.
- Tuition for new overseas students in 2026-27 is GBP 45,500 a year for Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences, and GBP 42,700 for Mathematics and the Business School. That is a range of GBP 42,700 to 45,500 (~INR 54–58 lakhs at ~GBP 127/INR, October 2026). Medicine is GBP 58,600 (~INR 74 lakhs). The 2027 entry fee is not yet published, and fees usually rise a little each year.
- Imperial’s living cost estimate for London is about GBP 16,400 to 17,000 for nine months (~INR 21–22 lakhs), plus flights and insurance. Fees and living together come to roughly GBP 59,000 to 63,000 a year (~INR 75–80 lakhs), or about GBP 76,000 (~INR 97 lakhs) for Medicine. This is our own sum from Imperial’s figures. Medicine is a six year course and most Engineering courses run four years, so the total is higher than for a three year degree.
- Money for the visa. Until 29 November 2026 the London savings rule is GBP 1,529 a month for up to 9 months. From 30 November 2026 it is reported to rise to GBP 1,570 a month, which is GBP 14,130 (~INR 18 lakhs). The money must sit in the account for 28 days in a row. This is only proof for the visa, not the full cost.
- The UK Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is GBP 776 a year (~INR 99,000), paid with the visa. For a 3 year degree it is about GBP 2,716 (~INR 3.4 lakhs). It costs more for a longer course, because it is charged per year of visa.
- Results timing. CBSE and Cambridge A Level (March series) results both come in May. UCAS applications are due before either, so Imperial works from predicted marks. Keep final marksheets ready for the offer stage. The Cambridge November series results are due on 7 January 2027, just before the main deadline.
- Do not count on an offer for good marks alone. We could not confirm a current offer rate for overseas applicants, so please treat every Imperial course as very competitive and apply with a spread of other universities.
