On demand, a campus tour of MIT is available on YouTube. Watch the MIT Campus Tour today! This video was made by an independent creator, not by the university.
Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.
MIT Admission Requirements for CBSE and Cambridge A Level
The table below sums up what MIT says it needs from applicants in each pathway. MIT publishes no cut-off marks, so we do not give a magic number. For subject plans and application strategy, please write to me for a one to one session.
| Requirement | CBSE Grade 12 | Cambridge A Level |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Indian Standard 12, CBSE board. Your school sends a Secondary School Report with your transcript. MIT asks for at least three years of grades. | Cambridge International AS and A Level. Your school sends the transcript and your external exam results, as MIT asks for results from exams such as A Levels. |
| Competitive Benchmark | MIT gives no minimum marks. Marks are the starting point only. In the last cycle MIT admitted 1,299 of 28,349 applicants, which is 4.6 percent. | Same. MIT gives no minimum A Level grades. Strong marks do not guarantee a place. |
| SAT / ACT | REQUIRED for entry in fall 2027. MIT publishes no minimum score. It looks at scores in the context of each applicant. It uses your best score in each section across sittings (a superscore). Scores must be taken by 30 November 2026 for Early Action and 31 December 2026 for Regular Action. | Same for everyone. You report your A Level scores yourself in the application. Official reports are needed only if you enrol. |
| English Proficiency | MIT strongly encourages an English test (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, PTE or Cambridge English) if you have used English for fewer than five years or do not study in English. Students at English medium schools are unlikely to need one. Please read MIT’s rule and ask us. Regular Action English tests must be done by 31 January. | Same rule. |
| Essays | Written answers inside MIT’s own application form. We did not re-check how many questions there are or how long each answer should be. Please read the current questions on MIT’s page. | Same. |
| Teacher Recommendations | Two teacher letters. MIT prefers one from a maths or science teacher and one from a humanities, social science or language teacher. | Same. |
| Interview | Many applicants are invited to talk with a volunteer MIT Educational Counselor. If MIT cannot offer you one, the interview is waived and your application is not hurt. | Same. |
| JEE / Olympiads | No Indian entrance test such as JEE is on MIT’s list of required items. Medals and projects belong in the activities section. We could not confirm how MIT weighs Olympiad results, so we make no promise. | Same. |
| Application Portal | MIT’s own application portal. It is not the Common App. The application fee is USD 75 (~INR 7,200), and fee waivers are available. | Same. All applicants use the MIT portal. |
| Early Action (EA) | Deadline: 1 November 2026. Decision: mid December. Non-binding, so you do not have to attend. Aid forms (CSS Profile) are due 30 November 2026. | Same. |
| Regular Action (RA) | Deadline: 4 January 2027 (last year it was 5 January). Decision: mid March. Aid forms are due 15 February 2027. Reply by 1 May. | Same. |
| Financial Aid | Need-blind for international students, and MIT meets the full need of every admitted student. You apply with the CSS Profile and your tax papers. See “What Parents Should Know” before you trust any one number. | Same. Whether you apply as a domestic or international student does not change the aid you are offered. |
| Visa | F-1 student visa. MIT sends the form once your child accepts. Applicants must make social media accounts public before the interview. From 15 September 2026, the old “duration of status” rule is gone, so students get a fixed stay of up to 4 years and must ask to extend if they need longer. | Same process for all international students. |
Common to both pathways
Everyone applies through MIT’s own portal, not the Common App. You can send only one application a year. If MIT turns down an Early Action application, you cannot apply again in Regular Action. Early Action is non-binding, so you may still choose another university. Early Action gives a decision in mid December, which leaves more time to plan money and the visa. MIT does not look at your family’s money when it decides admission. Aid forms are separate and have their own dates.
Why Should Your Child Consider MIT?
QS #1 and THE #2, a Top Place in Both Lists
MIT is #1 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and #2 in the THE World University Rankings 2027. THE puts Oxford first by a gap of only 0.1 points. The two rankings use different methods, so the places differ. MIT’s own facts page lists 106 Nobel laureates linked with MIT. A rank is a guide and not a promise. What matters for your child is the course, the lab access and the people.
Location, Cambridge in Massachusetts
MIT sits in Cambridge, Massachusetts, next to Boston and close to Harvard. The area is full of technology and life science companies, so students find research and internship chances nearby. We have not checked company counts or Indian community numbers for this edition, so we leave them out. The flight from India is long and has at least one stop. Plan for visits home with that in mind.
Strong Science and Wide Choice
MIT is not only for engineers. It teaches Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. It also offers Biology, Architecture and Economics. Students can combine subjects, for example Computer Science with Biology.
Need-Blind and Full Need Aid, One of Six Universities
MIT is one of six US universities that are both need-blind for international students and meet their full need. The six are Amherst, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Yale. Need-blind means MIT does not look at your family’s ability to pay when it decides admission. Full need means MIT meets 100 percent of the need it works out for you, whatever your citizenship. The sticker price for 2026-27 is USD 92,760 (~INR 89 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). MIT says students who received a need based scholarship paid a median of USD 10,268 (~INR 9.9 lakhs) in 2024-25. It also says 88 percent of students graduate debt free. Read the warnings in the next section before you plan around these numbers.
What parents should know
- CRITICAL: Do not plan around the USD 10,268 figure or the “families under USD 100,000 pay nothing” line. MIT’s page says families with income below USD 100,000 have no parent contribution and families below USD 200,000 typically attend tuition free. It does not say how these levels apply to families living in India. I can ask MIT for a net price estimate based on your own papers. Aid is worked out from your CSS Profile and tax return, not from a rule of thumb
- CRITICAL: “No loans” is not the full story. MIT builds the offer so that you should not need to borrow. Loans are still available, though. MIT also expects a student contribution from summer savings and term time work. I will ask MIT how this works for an international student on an F-1 visa
- CRITICAL: One application a year, and an Early Action rejection is final for that year. If MIT turns down your child in Early Action, MIT does not allow a Regular Action application.
- Cost for 2026-27, as MIT lists it. Tuition is USD 66,720 (~INR 64 lakhs). Housing is USD 14,090 (~INR 14 lakhs) and food is USD 8,104 (~INR 7.8 lakhs). Fees, books and personal costs add the rest. The total is USD 92,760 (~INR 89 lakhs). Flights are extra, because MIT works out travel separately. This is the price before any aid
- Calendar: Early Action is 1 November 2026 and Regular Action is 4 January 2027. Both fall before CBSE and Cambridge A Level results, which both come in May. You reply by 1 May, which is before CBSE results come out. Plan SAT or ACT dates early. Scores are due by 30 November (EA) or 31 December (RA). Final school marks come later, and an offer depends on them
- Aid dates are earlier than many families expect. The CSS Profile is due 30 November 2026 for Early Action and 15 February 2027 for Regular Action. Parent tax papers go through College Board’s IDOC service. Allow up to two weeks for them to process. If your parents live outside the US, send the tax return from India
- MIT is very hard to enter. For the Class of 2030, MIT admitted 1,299 of 28,349 applicants (4.6 percent), from 58 countries. Marks are the starting point. Teacher letters, essays and activities matter as much
- MIT uses its own portal, unlike Harvard, Stanford and Yale in this series, which use the Common App. Do not start the wrong form. The SAT or ACT is REQUIRED, and MIT takes the best score in each section
- Visa rules are changing. F-1 applicants must set social media accounts to public. From 15 September 2026, the old “duration of status” is gone. Your child gets a fixed stay of up to 4 years and must apply to extend it. OPT (work after the degree) and the STEM extension still exist, and we found no published rule to end them. A large fee on H-1B work visas is in court right now. India is not on the US travel ban list. Budget for the US visa fee, the SEVIS fee and a possible new “visa integrity fee”. We could not confirm the amounts in India this month. Rules move fast, so check the State Department and ICE pages
- We did not confirm the South Asian student groups, Olympiad rules or any programme for Indian students for this edition, so we make no claim about them. Ask us and we will check with MIT
