Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.

Stanford Admission Requirements for CBSE and Cambridge A Level

Important note for all international families: Stanford’s financial aid rule for international students is the most important thing in this document. Stanford is need-aware for international applicants. We explain it in the table below and again in What Parents Should Know. Please read both parts before you decide whether to ask for aid.

Requirement CBSE Grade 12 Cambridge A Level
Boards Accepted CBSE, ICSE and State Boards are all accepted. Stanford reads each application in the setting of your school and country. You do not need to convert your marks into an American GPA. Stanford publishes no grade cut-off. Cambridge International AS and A Level. Your school must send your GCSE results and your predicted A Level marks to Stanford. Stanford says it has no preference for one system.
Competitive Benchmark Stanford gives no benchmark. As our own guide, most successful Indian applicants are near the top of their school, often with 90 percent or more across Classes 9 to 12. A steady record from Class 9 to Class 12 matters more than one exam. Stanford gives no benchmark. As our own guide, strong applicants are usually predicted AAA to AA*A. Essays, activities and teacher letters count as much as marks.
SAT / ACT REQUIRED for the 2026-27 cycle (entry in autumn 2027). Stanford sets no minimum score. For students who joined in 2025 (the Class of 2029), the middle half scored SAT 1520 to 1570 and ACT 34 to 36. Stanford accepts superscores for both tests. You self-report scores when you apply. Official scores are needed only if you are admitted and enrol. Same rule. All applicants send SAT or ACT scores, whatever their school system. Stanford says an English test (IELTS or TOEFL) cannot replace the SAT or ACT.
English Proficiency NOT required. Stanford does not ask for TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. You may report a score if you wish. Stanford does say that fluency in English is a must for admission. UK universities in this series ask for an English test, so this is one fewer test. Same. No English test is needed.
Essays The Common Application main essay plus Stanford’s own short essays and answers. We did not re-check the word counts in October 2026, so please read the current question list on Stanford’s page. Stanford’s readers look for curiosity, depth and fit. Same for all applicants.
Teacher Recommendations Two letters from academic teachers and one school counsellor report. Pick teachers who know your child well and can speak about how your child thinks, not only about marks. Same.
Demonstrated Interest Stanford has said that it does not track demonstrated interest, such as webinars or visits. We could not re-check this in October 2026. Please confirm on Stanford’s page before you plan around it. Same.
Application Portal The Common Application, which is Stanford’s named portal. The application fee is USD 100 (~INR 9,600). Fee waivers are available if the fee is a hardship. Stanford does not use UCAS. Same.
Restrictive Early Action (REA) Common Application deadline: 1 November 2026. Decision by mid December. REA is non-binding, so you do not have to join if admitted. The catch is that you may not apply early to other private US universities or to any binding early plan. You may still apply early to public US universities with non-binding plans, to rolling admission schools and to universities outside the USA. If you add an optional arts portfolio, the Common Application is due 15 October and the portfolio 20 October. Same rules. Early applications to UK universities through UCAS are outside the USA, so they are allowed. Check each university’s own rules.
Regular Decision (RD) Common Application deadline: 5 January 2027. Decision by early April. Your reply date is 1 May. If you ask for financial aid, the aid forms have their own dates (see the aid row below). Same dates for all applicants.
Financial Aid for International Students CRITICAL. Stanford is need-aware for international students, including Indian students. If you say you will apply for aid, Stanford says this “will be a factor” and makes the process “more selective”. If you say you will not apply for aid and are then admitted, you cannot ask for aid at any time in your four years. Stanford says it meets the demonstrated need of admitted students who asked for aid, whatever their citizenship, and that it does not expect them to borrow. It offers no merit scholarships. For Regular Decision, international students use the CSS Profile (school code 4704), which opens on 1 October, with a priority date of 15 February. Aid decisions come in April. Same rule for Cambridge A Level students. Only US citizens, permanent residents, undocumented students and Eligible Noncitizens are need-blind at Stanford.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars A well known Stanford scholarship for graduate study, meaning a Master’s or a PhD. It is not for undergraduates. Please check the official page for what it covers, how long it runs and who can apply. It is very hard to win. Same.
Visa F-1 student visa. Stanford sends the I-20 form after you accept the offer. Since mid 2025, F-1 applicants must list their social media accounts from the last five years and set them to public before the interview. Visa officers review them. Wait times change by month and city, so check the US State Department page and book the interview as soon as you can. India is not on the US travel ban list. A new rule ended “duration of status” for F-1 students from 15 September 2026. Students now get a fixed stay of up to 4 years and must ask to extend it if the degree runs longer. After the degree, OPT (work for 12 months in your field) and a STEM OPT extension (24 more months) still exist. Same process for all international students.

Common to both pathways

Everyone applies through the Common Application, not UCAS. The fee is USD 100 (~INR 9,600). Stanford reads each CBSE or Cambridge A Level record in the setting of the student’s school. It does not use a fixed cut-off. It asks what your child did with the chances that were available. Your school must send transcripts, the counsellor report and teacher letters. Aid forms are separate, and they have their own dates.

Voices from Stanford, Indian Alumni

Sundar Pichai grew up in Chennai, studied at IIT Kharagpur, and then did an MS in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford. He is now CEO of Google and Alphabet. Media reports say Stanford invited him to speak at its June 2026 commencement. We have not read the speech on Stanford’s own site, so please treat this as reported.

Why Should Your Child Consider Stanford University?

QS #2 and THE #3, in the Middle of Silicon Valley

Stanford is joint #2 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (with Imperial College London) and joint #3 in the THE World University Rankings 2027 (with Princeton). The two rankings use different methods, so the places differ. Stanford’s best advantage is its location. The campus sits in Silicon Valley, the world’s busiest area for new technology companies. Stanford’s own alumni page lists the founders of Google, Netflix, LinkedIn, Instagram, Yahoo, NVIDIA and Nike among its graduates. Stanford’s faculty page lists 20 Nobel laureates on the current faculty (Fall 2025) and 36 Nobel Prize winners since the university began. For a student who wants to work in technology, start a company, or do research, few places link classroom and industry so closely.

Wide Choice Across 7 Schools, Including the d.school

Many UK courses ask a student to pick one subject at the time of applying. Stanford is different. It has seven Schools: Business, Doerr School of Sustainability, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Sciences, Law, and Medicine. Undergraduates do not have to decide a major on day one, and many mix subjects, for example Computer Science with Political Science. The d.school teaches design thinking, a way to solve problems, and is open to students from different departments. Stanford is also known for Symbolic Systems and Human-Computer Interaction, which sit between computing and the study of people. This breadth suits a student who is strong in several subjects.

Financial Aid for International Students, What Indian Families Must Know

Stanford is need-aware for international students. If your child says on the application that your family will ask for aid, Stanford says this “will be a factor” and makes the review “more selective”. This differs from Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Yale in this series, which are need-blind for international students. Stanford is need-blind only for US citizens, permanent residents, undocumented students and Eligible Noncitizens.

There are two good points. First, Stanford says it is committed to meeting the demonstrated need of every admitted student who asked for aid, whatever the citizenship. It does not expect them to borrow. Second, aid for an Indian family is worked out from the family’s own papers, not from a fixed rule. If you can pay the full cost, the safer route for admission is not to ask for aid. But the choice cannot be changed later. If you do not ask, and your child is admitted, aid is closed for all four years. Please talk to us before you decide.

Stanford and India, a Chennai Story in Silicon Valley

The best known Indian Stanford story starts in Chennai. Sundar Pichai studied at IIT Kharagpur, did his MS at Stanford, and now leads Google and Alphabet. Vinod Khosla (IIT Delhi, then a Stanford MBA) is widely reported as a co-founder of Sun Microsystems and later started Khosla Ventures. Sabeer Bhatia (Stanford MS in Computer Science) is widely reported as a co-founder of Hotmail. These are well known public facts that we did not re-check on Stanford’s own pages this month. They show that Indian students have a place in the industry that grew around Stanford.

What parents should know

  • CRITICAL: Financial aid is NEED-AWARE for international students. Asking for aid makes the review more selective. If you say you will not apply for aid and your child is later admitted, your family cannot apply for aid in any of the four years. Decide with care, before you submit
  • CRITICAL: Do not copy the well known “families under USD 100,000 pay nothing” line. Stanford’s page says its income levels (below USD 100,000 no parent contribution, below USD 150,000 tuition covered) “may not apply to families living outside of the United States”. For an Indian family, aid depends on your own papers. The page we read was last updated on 8 February 2023, so ask for a net cost estimate, not a rule of thumb
  • Cost for 2026-27, as Stanford lists it: tuition USD 67,731 (~INR 65 lakhs) and housing and food USD 22,944 (~INR 22 lakhs). The total cost of attendance is USD 97,545 (~INR 94 lakhs) at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026. It also covers books, personal costs and fees. Flights are extra. New students pay one time fees of USD 525 and USD 250. This is the full price before any aid
  • Calendar: REA is 1 November 2026 and RD is 5 January 2027. Both fall before CBSE results and Cambridge A Level results, which both come in May. Your school must send marks and predicted marks. SAT or ACT should be taken early, because scores are needed with the application
  • REA is non-binding, but it stops you from applying early to other private US universities. You may still apply early to public US universities with non-binding plans and to universities outside the USA, such as the UK
  • SAT or ACT is REQUIRED for 2026-27. There is no minimum. Recent enrolled students had a middle half of SAT 1520 to 1570 and ACT 34 to 36. Stanford takes superscores. Official scores are needed only on enrolment. No IELTS or TOEFL is needed, which is one fewer test than UK universities in this series
  • Stanford is hard to enter. The rate is very low and it has been reported at about 4 percent in recent years. We did not confirm a current figure in October 2026. Marks are the starting point. Essays, activities and teacher letters matter just as much
  • Visa rules are changing. F-1 applicants must set their social media accounts to public. From 15 September 2026, the old “duration of status” is gone, so your child gets a fixed stay of up to 4 years and must apply to extend. OPT (12 months) and STEM OPT (24 months) still exist. Rules about work visas after study, including the H-1B fee, are in court and move fast, so check before you rely on them. India is not on the US travel ban list
  • Extra visa costs: budget for the US visa fee, the SEVIS fee and a possible new “visa integrity fee”. We could not confirm how much each costs in India this month. Check the US State Department and ICE pages
  • Application fee: USD 100 (~INR 9,600). Fee waivers are available. Write to pcmadankumar@gmail.com for help
