Visit a university in person. I strongly recommend that families of Grade 9 and above students visit at least one university: this one, a local university in India, or any place you choose. Seeing the labs and classrooms and talking to students gives a child something a virtual tour cannot. If you need help planning a visit, write to me at pcmadankumar@gmail.com.
Harvard Admission Requirements, CBSE and Cambridge A Level
Harvard looks at the whole student. Marks matter, but they are only the starting point. Essays, teacher letters, activities and a student’s own story count too. No two successful applications look the same. Please reach out to me for a one on one counselling session.
| Requirement | CBSE Grade 12 | Cambridge A Level |
|---|---|---|
| Boards Accepted | Harvard says requirements are the same for Indian and US applicants and that it sets no quotas by country or school location. CBSE, ISC and State Board students send their school record in the same way | Cambridge International AS and A Level. Harvard asks the school to send predicted grades, based on classwork and mock exams |
| Minimum to Apply | Harvard publishes no minimum mark. A strong record through Classes 9 to 12 is the starting point | Harvard publishes no minimum. A strong A Level record in three or more subjects is the starting point |
| Competitive Benchmark | There is no published cut off. Most admitted students have top marks in every subject, so marks alone will not win a place. Depth in one or two interests and a clear personal story decide many cases | Top grades across subjects are the norm. Activities, leadership and essays count as much as the grades |
| SAT / ACT | REQUIRED. Harvard asks for the SAT or ACT from every applicant. Harvard does not publish a minimum score, and recent admitted students scored very high. Scores may be self reported when you apply. Students who enrol must then send official scores. Harvard notes the highest score in each section across test dates. For Restrictive Early Action it asks for scores by the end of October. TOEFL and IELTS cannot replace the SAT or ACT. Other results such as A Level or IB may be used only in exceptional cases where the tests cannot be reached | Same requirement for every applicant, whatever the qualification |
| English Proficiency | NOT required. Harvard does not ask for TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. You may send a score if you wish, but it will not replace the SAT or ACT | Same. Students taught in English do not need an English test |
| Essays | Five short answers of about 150 words each, in the Harvard section of the Common Application. They ask about your background, a time you disagreed with someone, your activities, how you will use your Harvard education, and what your roommates should know about you | Same |
| Teacher Recommendations | Two teacher letters from two different academic subjects. The school also sends a school report with a counsellor letter and the transcript. Harvard cannot take a transcript as an email attachment | Same |
| Midyear Report | The school sends first term Class 12 grades after the first term. Restrictive Early Action students may send them in February. Harvard gives its Regular Decision answer at the end of March, and you reply by early May. CBSE Class 12 results come around May, after that answer. So Harvard decides on school marks, pre board marks and predicted results. Harvard will want your final results once they are out. Please ask me to check the date it gives CBSE students | The school sends the midyear report in the same way. Harvard says it expects final A Level results by mid August. students in India sit the March series, with results in May (19 May in 2026), so the timing is comfortable |
| Alumni Interview | Some applicants may be offered an interview with a local Harvard graduate. We could not confirm this on Harvard’s current pages, so please treat it as a possible extra and not a requirement | Same |
| JEE / Olympiads | JEE is not asked for. Olympiad and competition results can go in the activities section as proof of strong interest | Not applicable |
| Application Portal | Common Application (commonapp.org). The Harvard page tells all first year applicants, Indian and US, to use it. Harvard does not run its own portal | Same |
| Restrictive Early Action | Deadline 1 November 2026. Answer in mid December. It is not binding, so a student may say no. Applying this way means your child cannot apply Early Decision, Early Action or Restrictive Early Action to any other private US college until Harvard replies. Applications to UK and other non US universities are allowed. Non binding early programmes at public US universities are also allowed | Same |
| Regular Decision (RD) | Deadline 1 January 2027. Answer at the end of March 2027. Reply by early May. School staff get an extra week to send their part | Same |
| Financial Aid | Need blind. Harvard says financial need never affects the chance of being admitted. It meets 100 percent of demonstrated need, and international students get the same aid as US students. Everyone sends a CSS Profile and an IDOC packet. The aid deadlines are 1 November (Restrictive Early Action) and 1 February (Regular Decision) | Same. International students are eligible for exactly the same aid as US students |
| Visa Requirement | F-1 student visa. Harvard sends the I-20 form after you accept. Harvard’s right to enrol international students is the subject of a long running court case, explained below. Parents should also read the notes on the social media rule, visa timing and work after study | Same |
Common to both pathways
Harvard uses the Common Application (commonapp.org). The application fee is USD 95 (~INR 9,100 at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). A fee waiver is available if the fee is a hardship. All financial aid families send the CSS Profile. Parents also upload income and tax proof from India. If there is no tax return, Harvard accepts salary certificates or an employer letter that states yearly income. Papers that are not in English need a translation. Harvard says need is judged only after admission. It never affects the admission decision.
Harvard and Indian Students
Harvard also has a Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute, which studies South Asia and runs an India Conference. Please check its website for dates.
Why Should Your Child Consider Harvard University?
#5 in QS and #6 in THE, With a 390 Year Record
Harvard was founded in 1636. It is the oldest university in the United States. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 (June 2026) Harvard is #5. In the THE World University Rankings 2027 (30 September 2026) it is #6, down from joint 5th last year. The two lists use different methods, so the numbers differ. Both place Harvard among the best in the world. Harvard graduates are respected by employers and universities around the globe. A degree here opens doors, but it does not decide a career alone.
Liberal Arts Education, With Time to Explore
Harvard College teaches the liberal arts. Your child can try courses across many fields before choosing a main subject. Harvard calls the main subject a concentration. It offers more than 2,900 courses across 50 concentrations. This suits a student who is strong in several subjects, or who is curious and has not yet settled on one. It can feel less direct than a course such as Engineering or Medicine at a UK university. Please ask me when a student must choose a concentration, because we could not confirm the time on Harvard’s pages.
Need Blind, and Harvard Meets 100 Percent of Need
Harvard is one of six US universities that are need blind for international students and meet full need. The others are Amherst, Dartmouth, MIT, Princeton and Yale. Need blind means your family’s money is never looked at when Harvard decides on admission. Full need means Harvard covers the gap between what the family can pay and the cost. For 2026 to 2027, Harvard says families earning under USD 100,000 (~INR 96 lakhs) a year are not expected to pay anything. Families earning up to USD 200,000 (~INR 1.9 crores) get at least the full tuition covered. Above that, aid is worked out for each family. These limits assume typical savings, and they leave out home value and retirement money. Harvard also gives a USD 2,000 start up grant in the first year (~INR 1.9 lakhs). Harvard gives no merit scholarships. All aid is based on need.
Harvard and Indian Families
Harvard says about 16 percent of the Class of 2029 are international students. Cambridge, Massachusetts is also home to MIT, so the area has a very large student community. We could not confirm a current number of Indian students at Harvard, so please ask me or check Harvard’s own pages.
What parents should know
- CRITICAL. Harvard requires the SAT or ACT, and Restrictive Early Action closes on 1 November 2026, soon after the date of this document. Harvard asks for early action test scores by the end of October. Most families who have not yet sat the test should plan for Regular Decision on 1 January 2027 and book the next test date at once. TOEFL and IELTS cannot take the place of the SAT or ACT.
- CRITICAL. Aid depends on your family income, and you must apply for it. Harvard gives no merit scholarship. It says families under USD 100,000 (~INR 96 lakhs) pay nothing toward attendance. Families up to USD 200,000 (~INR 1.9 crores) have full tuition covered. Families above that may still get aid, but there is no promise. Students are expected to earn about USD 3,500 a year for personal costs, usually through campus work. Loans are available if a family wishes, but Harvard says it will never require them.
- Yearly cost for 2026 to 2027 is USD 91,634 in bills from Harvard (~INR 88 lakhs at ~USD 96/INR, October 2026). That is tuition USD 62,226, fees USD 6,216, housing USD 14,250 and food USD 8,942. Add about USD 3,500 for books and personal costs and up to USD 5,000 for travel. The full total is USD 95,134 to 100,134 (~INR 91–96 lakhs). Health insurance is USD 4,954 more, unless a family plan covers the student. Most families who get aid pay far less.
- Harvard’s acceptance rate was 4.2 percent for the Class of 2029 (2,003 admitted from 47,893 applicants), the latest figure Harvard has published. Harvard no longer publishes separate early and regular numbers. Please do not rely on older figures that say early applicants have much better odds. Academic marks are the starting point. Essays, teacher letters and activities do the rest.
- Restrictive Early Action is not binding. It does limit other early applications to private US colleges until Harvard replies in mid December. UK applications through UCAS, Oxford and Cambridge included, are allowed. Non binding early programmes at public US universities are also allowed.
- Check each year: the court case about international students. In May 2025 the US government said it was withdrawing Harvard’s SEVP certification, which is the approval needed to enrol international students. Harvard challenged this in court. In June 2025 a federal court issued orders that pause the government’s actions. In August 2025 the government said it would not use its May letter to revoke the certification. Harvard’s International Office says the orders stay in place while the case goes on. It says Harvard can keep issuing the I-20 form. It also says the court’s rulings are not final. A law firm summary reports that the government’s appeal is set for a hearing on 6 October 2026. We do not know the outcome, so please check the Harvard International Office page before you decide.
- US visa rules have changed. Since June 2025, F-1 visa applicants must list their social media accounts of the past five years and set them to public. India is not on the US travel ban list. Appointment waits change by month and by city, so check the US State Department page and apply as soon as the I-20 arrives. Budget about USD 185 for the visa fee and USD 350 for the SEVIS fee. A further USD 250 “visa integrity fee” exists in US law. We could not confirm whether Indian consulates charge it yet.
- Stay length and work after study. From 15 September 2026 the US ends “duration of status” for F-1 students. A student is now admitted for the length of the programme, up to a maximum of 4 years, and must apply to extend if more time is needed. A four year Harvard degree fits inside that limit. OPT (work for 12 months after study, and 24 months more for STEM subjects) still exists. The US government says it is reviewing it, and we found no published rule to end it. Harvard has also said it approves CPT, which is work during study, only when an internship is a degree requirement. Harvard College students are therefore generally not eligible. The USD 100,000 fee on new H-1B work visas has been challenged in court and is blocked for now. Rules here are moving fast, so please check again before your child applies.
